Discount Formulas — Percent Off, Stacking, and Reverse Pricing Explained

Most people assume stacked discounts add up. They don't — and that one misunderstanding costs shoppers real money. Here's every formula you need.

Standard Percent Off

Sale Price Formula
Sale Price = Original × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)
Savings = Original × (Discount% ÷ 100)
Example: $80 at 25% off → $80 × 0.75 = $60 · Saved: $20

Stacked / Sequential Discounts

Stacking Formula (2 discounts)
Final = Original × (1−r1) × (1−r2)
20% sale + 10% coupon = 28% total — NOT 30%
$100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = $72 (saved $28)
Effective rate = 1 − (1−r1) × (1−r2)

Why Stacked Discounts Don't Add Up

1
Start: $100 item. Apply 20% sale → $80
2
Apply 10% coupon to $80 → $80 × 0.90 = $72
3
Total saved = $28 = 28%, not 30%
✓ The second discount only saves 10% of the already reduced price — not 10% of the original

Reverse — Find Original Price

Reverse Pricing Formula
Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)
Example: Sale $75 with 25% off → $75 ÷ 0.75 = $100

BOGO — True Effective Discount

BOGO Effective Discount per Item
Effective % = Discount% × (Free Items ÷ Total Items)
BOGO Free: buy 1 pay for 1, get 1 free → 50% per item
BOGO 50% off: pay full + half → 25% per item
Buy 2 Get 1 Free: 3 items, 1 free → 33.3% per item

Discount with Sales Tax

  • Always apply discount first, then add sales tax
  • Final = Original × (1 − Discount%) × (1 + Tax%)
  • Example: $100, 20% off, 8% tax → $80 × 1.08 = $86.40
  • You save the tax on the discounted portion too

How to Get the Most from Discounts — What Retailers Don't Tell You

Discount marketing is designed to make savings feel larger than they are. These strategies help you compare deals accurately.

Verify the "Original" Price

In 2026, retailers commonly inflate original prices before applying discounts. A "$200 item, 50% off" may routinely sell for $100. Research the typical price before assuming any discount is genuine.

Order Matters for Stacked Discounts

If you have both a fixed-dollar coupon ($10 off) and a percentage coupon (20% off), the order of application affects your total. Apply the percentage discount first when the item is at full price for maximum savings.

BOGO vs Outright Discount

BOGO Free = 50% off per item only if you need two. If you only need one item, a straightforward 30% off is better than a BOGO deal you'll partially waste.

Stacking Credit Card Rewards

Credit card cashback and rewards stack on top of retailer discounts and apply to the post-discount price. A 2% cashback card on a $72 final price (after stacked discounts) gives you $1.44 back — use our Stack mode to factor this in as a third discount.

Sales Tax Reduces Your Net Savings

Tax is applied after discount. A $100 item at 20% off with 10% tax costs $72 — you saved $20 on the item but still paid $7.20 in tax. Our calculator shows both the pre-tax and post-tax totals so you know exactly what leaves your wallet.

Bulk Pricing: Calculate Cost Per Unit

Bulk discounts look attractive but only make sense if you'll use the quantity. Use our Bulk mode to compare the per-unit cost at each tier against buying exactly what you need.
